Hi! I am Kandice Levero, and I created all of these mineral paintings. It started as my third year in a row of the 36 Days of Type challenge and grew into a reconnection with my love of painting, deep love of home decor, and a way to meditate at the end of my day.

I “paint” each mineral on my iPad using Procreate. I started with the letters A-Z. Each mineral is created to visually represent the mineral itself and the first letter of the mineral. The second set consists of numbers 0-9. These were chosen in relation to hardness on the Mohs scale of Mineral Hardness and each is formed to shape the number.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been totally captivated by minerals. I visit the Natural History Museum in Washington, DC often to immerse myself in the knowledge of mineralogy. I find myself completely overwhelmed in the Gem & Mineral halls so much so I feel it’s hard to breathe!  I’m a classically trained oil painter from a very young age, so combine that with my typography obsession and there you have it!

I create all prints in my Baltimore studio, and I hot press the mugs here by hand too.
